Edith Wharton (1862-1937)
Edith Wharton, an American novelist and short story writer, in 1921 became the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize. Born into a wealthy New York family, in 1907 she and her then-husband relocated to France where she would remain most of her life. In Paris she formed a number of literary friendships, most notably with Henry James, to whom she credited great influence on her own writing. As an expatriate during World War I, she wrote American newspaper reports and was instrumental in the successes of numerous charities. Among her significant literary works are House of Mirth (1905), Ethan Frome (1911), Madame de Treymes (1907) and The Age of Innocence (1920), the novel that earned her the Pulitzer Prize.
The Hermit and the Wild Woman is collection of six Edith Wharton short stories, including the title story, as well as "The Last Asset," "In Trust," "The Pretext, "The Verdict," "The Pot-Boiler," and "The Best Man." First published in 1908.
